Downtown Bikeways Work Group November 2019 Update

We kicked off our November meeting with a presentation from Kelsey Fogt, a Minneapolis Transportation Planner. Kelsey provided an overview of the upcoming protected bikeways project on 1st Ave S, Grant St and 2nd Ave S. The group was particularly enthusiastic about the elevated bikeway portion that will go behind a floating bus stop. We hope to welcome more Public Works representatives to future meetings!

Next, we discussed the upcoming hearings for the Mayor’s proposed budget, and the importance of the city allocating more money for Vision Zero and protected bicycle infrastructure. It’s important for safer streets advocates to weigh in on how the City allocates its resources. The three ways to do so are:

Please support safer streets by doing one of the above actions!

After that, we reviewed the current status of the ◼︎◼︎◼︎ ◼︎◼︎◼︎◼︎◼︎◼︎◼︎ project, and began to chart our communication strategy around it.

Then, we discussed the possibility of dedicating an upcoming meeting to the topic of policing.

We decided to work to schedule a joint meeting with the Pedestrian Work Group for early 2020.

Ash provided the group with an update on Our Streets Minneapolis goal of improving the safety of county roads, which are the majority of roads in the City’s High Injury Crash Network.

Lastly, we discussed some ideas for how the structure of Open Streets Minneapolis could be different in the future.

Our next meeting was scheduled to occur on the same date (December 2nd, time TBD), as Hennepin County Commissioner Marion Greene’s FixLyndale meeting. In lieu of rescheduling our meeting, we will instead plan to attend the FixLyndale meeting as a group. We will send out coordinating information ahead of the FixLyndale meeting. Email Ash at [email protected] for more information.
