Downtown Bikeways Work Group July 2019 Update

Come celebrate with us next month!

Last month we decided to meet in July even though many attendees would be out of town for the July 4th holiday. We decided that we didn’t want to lose our recent momentum - and we didn’t! We have lots of exciting projects that we are working on, some of which we’ll share at a later date.

We started the meeting with introductions, welcoming one new member, and welcoming back one member from a previous era of the Downtown Bikeways work group! We shared some of our favorite biking related memories as an ice breaker.

We talked a little bit about our recent success in rallying support for re-striping Park and Portland back in place as buffered bike lanes. We decided that next month’s meeting would be a celebration of all of that hard work. If you have ever been a part of the Downtown Bikeways Work Group in the past, or if you emailed or called your officials in support of buffered bike lanes on Park and Portland, please come join us to 🎉celebrate🎉 that success next month: August 5th, 6:00-7:30 at the Loring Park Dunn Brothers!

After that, we talked about our ongoing project of doing outreach in support of protected bikeways at upcoming Open Streets events. Cindy shared a printed copy of the photos that everyone has submitted of good Minneapolis bike infrastructure. (Thanks Jim, Andrew and Richard!) Jess is going to put together a SurveyMonkey where we all can vote on which photos should be included on our poster(s). Jess will work with Emily to get the posters laid out and printed ahead of the next Open Streets event at Lake + Minnehaha.

We need as many folks as possible to staff the “Outreach Tent Crew” time slots at the six remaining Open Streets events in order to make sure that this outreach happens. Here is the current schedule of DT Bikeways Outreach Tent Crew volunteers.

If you haven’t signed up yet, click one of the links below! After you sign up, please email Jess to let him know which slots you have signed up for so that he can edit the schedule. (Doubling up slots is A-okay, and probably more fun, but let’s try to get full coverage of all the events first, if possible)

We spent most of the remainder of the meeting talking about strategy - the details of that conversation we hope to share in a future blog post. Or, come to our next meeting Monday, August 5th, 6:00-7:30pm at the Dunn Brothers at 329 W 15th Street to be a part of the discussion! Please show up at 5:45 for a quick pre-meeting orientation chat if you’re new.
