Downtown Bikeways Work Group March 2019: Human Crosswalk, Commuting and... Schools?

Our Downtown Bikeways Work Group made plans to celebrate our favorite way to get around downtown and it involves a human crosswalk, commuting and schools! Simply, not all at once.

The working session kicked off with each member talking to their strengths since newer members are a large portion of the group. Our members are looking for a few things out of the group including: seeking a career change, improving skills in advocacy, improve the neighborhood, holding elected officials accountable and having a voice to be heard since social media has not been effective. The group made a commitment to continue to review the mission and vision of the team as a standing agenda item.

  • The working session dove into the knowledge sharing document to ensure the answers were concise and each had multiple attempts at an answer. Within the sub-teams for each corridor, each team outlined several ideas to reach out into the community. In conjunction with Lakes and Legends, organizing a human crosswalk to advocate for pedestrians and setting up temporary bike lanes. Meeting with local school to host a Bike to School Day. Setting up a Pit Stop during Bike to Work Day (May 17th). Theses all drive our missions and directly addresses the issues discussed in our January working session.

Various announcements and updates finished up the meeting which included Ashwat Narayanan joining Our Streets MPLS as the Executive Director (
blog), learning points with recent outreach to local elected officials, opening on the Bicycle Advisory Committee (website).

Tasks for individuals are for Jesse to meet with the local school about the Bike to School Event. Jim to write up a paragraph to be supported by those at the Bike to Work pit stop. Cindy to report back on the City’s celebration location for the Bike to Work event. Mike to propose possible pit stop locations back on Strava heat map. Alyssa will reach out to Lakes and Legends about continuing the partnership from last year and investigate the possibility of video production with the College of Arts and Design.

If you'd like to be involved, we'd love to have you join us! Our next meeting is on Monday, April 1st at the Dunn Brothers at 329 W 15th Street (please show up at 5:45 for a quick pre-meeting orientation chat if you’re new).
