Word on the Streets

The Park and Portland Ribbon Cutting

This past Monday the Minneapolis Bicycle Coalition, Hope Community, and elected officials came together to celebrate the bicycling improvements made on Park and Portland Avenues. The event was held at Peavey Park at the corner of Park and Franklin, a busy intersection made safer by the widened bike lanes and the change from 3 to 2 lanes south of Franklin. A perfect place to come together for a ribbon-cutting ceremony!

Around 30 people came out (most by bike) which was fantastic for 8 AM on a cloudy Monday morning. There was great conversation, coffee and donuts, and a lot of enthusiasm for the event. At 8:30 we had brief speeches about why we were celebrating.

  • Ethan (Minneapolis Bicycle Coalition) began by thanking everyone who helped make this project happen and introduced the speakers.

  • Council Member Robert Lilligren (who arrived by bike), Council Member Elizabeth Glidden, and Will Delaney from Hope Community all discussed the importance of the improvements and what this does for the community.

  • Commissioner McLaughlin talked about the importance of elected officials in getting projects like this done and brought everyone together to cut the ribbon with cheers from the crowd.

Overall, it was a great event and everyone seemed to enjoy themselves. We celebrate successes with events like this to keep up the momentum for future bicycling projects. Look for more events like this as we continue to see new infrastructure and safety improvements unfold.

Hennepin County Commissioner' race

On Tuesday, November 6, voters in much of North and Northeast Minneapolis (and several neighboring suburbs) will choose a new Hennepin County Commissioner. (You can see if you are in the 2nd district here.)

Please vote! You can find your polling place here.

The two remaining candidates for Hennepin County District 2 are Linda Higgins and Blong Yang. Both filled out Minneapolis Bicycle Coalition questionnaires earlier this year:

Happy voting!

(Note that the Minneapolis Bicycle Coalition is a 501(c)3 non-profit and does not endorse candidates. This information is to help voters make informed decisions.)

Celebrate Improved Park and Portland on Monday

As fall settles in, there are many things to consider as a bicyclists in Minneapolis: dressing for cooler temperatures, getting your bike tuned up after all of your summer cycling, and the celebration of major safety improvements on two busy bicycling corridors: Park and Portland!

  • The Minneapolis Bicycle Coalition invites you to bike by Park Avenue & 27th on your way to work, school, or just for fun from 8-9am on Monday, 11/5/2012.

  • Breakfast goodies will be handed out and you will have a chance to thank some important people and organizations who helped bring about the changes to Park and Portland, including Council Member Robert Lilligren, Council Member Elizabeth Glidden, Hope Community Inc., and Commissioner Peter McLaughlin.

These elected officials and groups will be on hand to share their reasons for supporting the important safety improvements made to these major thoroughfares. These avenues are now safer not just for bicyclists, but for pedestrians and the community at large.

We recently glimpsed a first look at the new street infrastructure on Park and Portland and we're excited to have some breakfast, share some high fives, and conversation on Monday morning. We look forward to seeing you there!
