Organization Summary

The Minneapolis Bicycle Coalition inspires people to bicycle and advocates for a city where everyone feels comfortable riding. The Coalition uses the joy and broad public benefits of bicycling to engage, empower, and mobilize grassroots and grasstops support for bicycle improvements. Our advocacy work includes the Bikeways for Everyone campaign for 30 new miles of protected bikeways by 2020. (www.mplsbike.org)

Position Summary and Schedule

The Minneapolis Bicycle Coalition seeks a paid, part-time Planning Intern to support efforts on Bikeways for Everyone and other areas. The position is for an average of 10-15 hours per week from late May to late August, depending on the ideal candidate’s schedule. The Planning Intern will work under the direct supervision of the Community Organizer and collaborate with other staff and volunteers.

Responsibilities of the Planning Intern include:

  • collect and analyze information to support general Bikeways for Everyone advocacy efforts and efforts around specific protected bikeways and other street improvement projects;

  • create maps, StreetMix pictures, and other visuals as needed;

  • support technical efforts related to a Minneapolis Complete Streets policy and evaluating potential future focus areas for the Coalition;

  • write at least one blog a month presenting new information;

  • complete one larger project/report during the internship on a topic to be determined collaboratively; and

  • perform administrative, clerical, and other duties as directed.

Experience and Qualifications

Minimum qualifications:

  • At least finished with junior year of undergraduate work in city planning, urban studies, geography, architecture, civil engineering, or related field;

  • Strong interest in building skills around planning for and supporting bicycle improvements;

  • Ability to work as part of a team and follow through with tasks;

  • Professional communication skills; and

  • Proficient computer skills including social networking sites and word processing.

 

Preferred qualifications:

  • Knowledge of street design basics and protected bikeway design basics;

  • Knowledge of Minneapolis;

  • Some previous work or internship experience in planning, transportation, or related work;

  • Bachelor’s degree;

  • Strong interest in making Minneapolis more bicycle friendly for everyone;

  • Graphic design or street rendering skills; and

  • Skilled with Google Apps.

 

Wage and other Benefits

The wage range for this internship is $8 - $10 per hour, depending on experience and skills. The intern will work alongside and learn from the Coalition’s staff and volunteer leaders.

 

Work conditions

Work will primarily be done at the Coalition’s office, but will include some meetings and events outside of the office, primarily at locations in Minneapolis.
