Bicyclists among those celebrating Lowry Bridge re-opening October 27

Tomorrow, October 27, the Lowry Bridge will re-open to the public.  The Minneapolis Bicycle Coalition, together with other organizations, local residents, and advocates for riverfront trails, successfully worked with County staff and elected officials to incorporate bike facilities on the Lowry Bridge. Bicyclists will participate in the bridge opening “parade” at 12:15 October 27 as part of bridge-opening festivities.

Community members call for Washington Avenue Improvements on PARK(ing) Day, September 21

The Minneapolis Bicycle Coalition, in partnership with Open Book, will host a PARK(ing) Day space, directly in front of Open Book (1011 Washington Avenue S) on Friday, September 21 from 10am - 2pm. An on-street parking space will be transformed into a space in which people chat, eat lunch, meet with friends, and participate in a poetry reading on a stage!

500 Letters Supporting Washington Ave Bike Lanes

The Minneapolis Bicycle Coalition will present more than 500 hand-written letters to downtown Minneapolis City Council Member Lisa Goodman (Ward 7) at a 9:30 am meeting on Wednesday. All of the letters – written by downtown Minneapolis users and residents – request that the City and Hennepin County install protected bicycle lanes on Washington Ave.

The Minneapolis Bicycle Coalition applauded a proposal introduced today at the Minneapolis City Council Transportation and Public Works Committee to refine last year’s two-way conversions of Hennepin and First Avenue.

“The proposed changes to Hennepin and First will be a huge improvement for people bicycling into downtown,” said Lisa Bender, a founder of the Minneapolis Bicycle Coalition.  “These changes reflect the strong commitment of City staff and leadership to ensure that bicycling is a safe and convenient option for people traveling into downtown.”

The City of Minneapolis’ MARQ2 project has left Minneapolis cyclists with few options for accessing downtown by bicycle.

“Transit improvements are an important step forward for Minneapolis, but this project has left us with very few options for bicycling in downtown,“ said Michael Jones, a cyclist who commutes daily into downtown Minneapolis.  “We want to work with the City to get a strong plan in place for improving bicycle access to downtown.”
