Research has demonstrated that car-free streets create environments where people want to congregate and spend money. A car-free K-mart site would add to the vibrancy of Whittier.
Nicollet Avenue South is a high-injury street.
The City of Minneapolis’ Vision Zero program has identified Nicollet Avenue S as a street where people walking, biking and driving are most likely to experience a severe crash. Adding more car traffic will worsen these safety issues.
Nicollet Avenue near the K-mart site hasn’t had car traffic for decades.
The segment of Nicollet Avenue north of the K-mart site, known as Eat Street, is breaking down and will be redesigned in the coming years. A car-free K-mart site will make it possible to reimagine Eat Street for people.
