After last weekend's record-breaking start to Open Streets 2017, we're bringing the fun over to Washington and 1st Ave in Downtown!
Come and join us from 11 AM - 5 PM this Sunday, June 11th to keep the summer celebration rolling through Downtown Minneapolis. Keep reading for some highlights that you can look forward to as well as links to sign up to volunteer! These events completely depend on our awesome volunteer force and we welcome all folks to join us behind the scenes to help us bring the event to life!
OPEN STREETS DOWNTOWN HIGHLIGHTS
- Both Alchemy 365 and the YMCA will be leading live workouts throughout the day
- The Minnesota Timberwolves will be out by the Target Center
- The Red Cow will be hosting a big shindig in their parking lot, just off of the route
- We've got a huge Kid's Zone at 5th Ave
- The Aviary will be out showcasing some aerial performances
- FOOD TRUCKS, FOOD TRUCKS, FOOD TRUCKS
- And be sure to check out the pop-up intersections and protected bikeway to learn about how we can make our community's streets safer for everyone!
VOLUNTEER AT OPEN STREETS DOWNTOWN
We're still looking for a number of volunteers to help make this event happen. In particular, we need folks for the middle or late afternoon shifts... all the early birds already have the morning covered for us. Score a free 2017 Open Streets T-shirt by volunteering for just a couple hours!
Here's the lowdown on the remaining positions:
Street Ambassadors -Volunteer to be a street ambassador from 2:30-5:15pm! You'll be equipped with chalk, bubbles, and games to activate the event while you ensure that the route remains free of motorized traffic.
Pop-Up Protected Bikeway Ambassadors - Be a part of the protected bikeway experience and help us gain support for safe bikeways! This role is especially great for outgoing people who bike in Minneapolis or who understand the benefits of protected bikeways.
Pop-Up Walkway Ambassadors - Sign up to chat with folks about safer walkways during any of the available three shifts! This is a NEW role at Open Streets, which was introduced after the Minneapolis Bicycle Coalition embraced pedestrian advocacy and became Our Streets Minneapolis.
Breakdown Crew - Help us break down the event from 4:00-5:30pm! This is the shortest volunteer shift but is still very important to ensure that the route is re-opened to car traffic on time.
Planeteers - Help us to keep Downtown looking pretty and free of trash or litter during the last shift from 2:30pm - 5:15pm! Hop on some roller skates, skate board, or just bop around the route while picking up litter. We want to leave the area looking better than we found it!
