Advocates and Elected Officials Celebrate Improvements on Park & Portland Avenues

November 5, 2012 8am – 9am; ribbon-cutting and speaking at 8:30am, Peavey Park

The Minneapolis Bicycle Coalition, in partnership with Hope Community Inc., Commissioner McLaughlin, Council Member Glidden, and Council Member Lilligren, is holding a celebration of theimplementation of safety improvements on Park Avenue and Portland Avenue on Monday, November 5.  The improvements that make these two avenues safer and friendlier for pedestrians, bicyclists, and the community include reduced speed limits, new buffered bike lanes on the right side of the road, and reduction in car travel lanes in certain areas. The celebration will take place on the corner of Franklin Avenue and Park Avenue, in Peavey Park. Volunteers from the Minneapolis Bicycle Coalition will be on hand to distribute breakfast treats to bicycle and pedestrian commuters passing by.

This event recognizes the efforts of Hennepin County, the City of Minneapolis, the Minneapolis Bicycle Coalition, Hope Community, Inc., and other neighborhood partners in making Park and Portland safer and better assets for the community. Park and Portland have long been corridors with too-fast traffic that hurt quality of life for their neighbors, have been difficult for pedestrians to cross, and have discouraged all but the bravest from biking. With the recent changes, there has been a huge step toward calmer traffic and more livable streets.
