Development and Communications Director position

Position Summary

The Development and Communications Director leads work around fundraising (including event sponsorships, individual giving, and grants) and communications related to the work of Our Streets. 

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • manage event sponsorship efforts to support Open Streets Minneapolis and Minneapolis Bike Month, including helping set sponsor benefits, identifying sponsor prospects, outreach and negotiation with potential sponsors, proposal writing, and coordinating sponsor benefits;

  • manage individual membership development, including coordinating appeals, renewal systems, asks at events, member events, house parties, membership database, fostering a fundraising culture with Board and staff, training volunteers in making membership asks, and donor stewardship;

  • direct major donor outreach work;

  • manage grant prospecting and development and support in writing and submitting grants and contracts as needed;

  • manage Our Streets Minneapolis and Open Streets Minneapolis communications work, including social media, e-newsletters, website maintenance, preparing annual report, and other activities as needed;

  • help manage communications around Our Streets advocacy and engagement work, including preparing email action alerts, drafting press releases and working with media, and other activities as needed;

  • supervise staff, consultants, or interns supporting development and communications work; and

  • perform administrative, clerical, and other duties as needed.

Experience and Qualifications

Minimum qualifications:

  • At least four years experience in development, membership, event sponsorship, or related;

  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience;

  • Comfort managing staff and interns;

  • Strong comfort asking for sponsorships and individual contributions and strong interpersonal skills;

  • Excellent written and verbal communications skills;

  • Understanding of what it takes to grow event sponsorship and membership program;

  • Strong computer skills including database software, social networking sites, and word processing;

  • Ability to work independently while managing multiple priorities; and

  • Attention to detail and ability to follow through with tasks.

Preferred qualifications:

  • Knowledge of Minneapolis and connections with local businesses;

  • Success fundraising for community events;

  • Success growing membership programs;

  • Experience supporting communications on an advocacy campaign;

  • Basic graphic design skills;

  • Success with grant writing;

  • Strong interest in making Minneapolis more walk and bicycle friendly;

  • A strong understanding of social justice and racial equity issues and commitment to supporting change to advance equity; and

  • Proficient with Google Apps and NationBuilder.

Salary and Benefits

The salary range for this position is $44,000-$56,000, depending on experience and qualifications. Benefits package includes generous and flexible paid time off, health insurance, and retirement.

Special Considerations

Our Streets Minneapolis offers a flexible schedule, but this position does require some work on nights and weekends.
