Neighbors Demand Bike Lanes for Traffic Calming

I attended a fascinating neighborhood meeting Wednesday about restriping 42nd Street (Country Road 42). The road was resurfaced last year but not painted pending neighborhood discussions. It's a wide road. Parking is permitted but, in most places, there are few cars parked.

It was the bike lane option that got the most interest, but not from cyclists! See the option called "Parking South Side" in the link above. The neighbors want to slow traffic and make it easier for pedestrians to cross the street and think that bike lanes offer the best chance to do that. The cyclists present all said that the road was already good for cyclists and that they didn't need bike lanes bike lanes because it's a wide road with lots of unused parking space.

Bike lanes are good for a city, and not just for bikers!
