Advocacy Toolbox: Building Capacity for White Allies

28333331531_58f6a92cf1_z.jpgIn just over a week, on Saturday March 11th, the Coalition will be hosting an event unlike any other we’ve had before! Last spring, we hosted a series of Advocacy Skillshares that helped to equip people with the tools to advocate in their City, community, neighborhood, and personal life. The Skillshares were successful and requests were made to have another one in the books this year.

While we had a great time and learned a lot last year, we wanted to do something a little different to mix it up! Thus, the birth of the advocacy skillshare’s cousin, Advocacy Toolbox: Building Capacity for White Allies. Join us on Saturday, March 11th, 10:30am-12:30pm at the Wedge Table Community Room (2412 Nicollet Ave S). Coffee and lights snacks provided!

We will be joined by speakers Council Member Lisa Bender of Ward 10 and Carolyn Szczepanski of Showing up for Racial Justice Minnesota (SURJ MN). Both speakers have been avid advocates for many years and come with both personal and professional anecdotes about their lives in advocacy, how their different privileges have influenced their ventures, and tips for using your own privileges/advantages to help others and become a better white ally. Laura Kling of the Minneapolis Bicycle Coalition will be moderating the event.

If you are interested in growing your tools and perspective in advocacy; this event is for you! While both speakers are involved in the bike world, their stories will surely surpass bicycle advocacy and can be applicable to all advocacy. All folks interested in advocacy and growing white allyship are strongly encouraged to attend!

Expect the event to be informative, community-oriented, interactive, fun, challenging, and to equip you with the tools to be an excellent advocate and build capacity to be a white ally.

While this event is geared toward white allies, people of color (POC) are welcome to attend! We will hold a welcoming space for all people. By attending this event, you agree to abide by the Minneapolis Bicycle Coalition’s Safer Spaces Policy: All identities welcome here. We all work together to create safer spaces. Bigotry will not be tolerated.
