5/19/2015 BAC Engineering Subcommittee

This is my second time attending the City's Bicycle Advisory Committee's Engineering Subcommittee meeting.

What is the Bicycle Advisory Committee?

Click through the link above or scroll to the bottom of the post for more information.

The Engineering Subcommittee meets the 3rd Tuesday of the month, 4:00-6:00 p.m. at the Colonial Warehouse Building, 212 3rd Ave N, Suite 404. The next Engineering Subcommittee meeting will be June 16th.

These meetings are open to the public, although if you are not a BAC member you should be prepared to take an observation role, rather than a voting and participatory role. If you will be attending the meeting or if you have questions you may want to contact the Subcommittee Chair, Ciara Schlichting ([email protected]). There is also a mailing list Ciara can put you on which sends out the monthly agenda and a meeting reminder.

I attend the subcommittee meetings as a member of the public. Consultants and staff from different jurisdictions present plans and ask for comments from the BAC members. Members make motions to support, ask for additional study or design, or call out trouble spots in plans. If you want to see the details of what goes into road project design, and how decisions get made ("Why did they put the bikeway on the south side of the street rather than the north side?"), you would enjoy these meetings.

What is the Bicycle Advisory Committee?

From the City's website,

The role of the Minneapolis Bicycle Advisory Committee (BAC) is to promote both commuter and recreational bicycling, to advocate for bicycling infrastructure improvements, to encourage safe riding, and to involve people interested in bicycling issues throughout the city. The BAC functions as an advisory committee to the Mayor and City Council as well as the Park Board and serves as a liaison to bicyclists, businesses, neighborhoods, and other communities and agencies.

BAC membership consists of appointees from each ward, three at-large parks board appointees and voting members representing the City Council, City departments and partner organizations such as Minneapolis Public Schools, Metro Transit and MnDOT. All BAC Meetings are open to the public.

The BAC meets monthly as a full committee and has two subcommittees that meet regularly. If you plan to attend an upcoming meeting, you may wish to contact the committee staff to confirm the time and location.

Committee Staff: Matthew Dyrdahl, 612-673-3642 or [email protected].
